Details: “There was nothing before Elvis”
Presley returns to prove on the stage of Teatr Nowy that it is never too late for a comeback. A whizz-kid from the American South with a smug smile and a guitar, he conquers the hearts of the entire world. He’s got it all: talent, looks and a manager who will turn him into the King. The first international Total Star whose image is a product of meticulous planning. Presley is no singer. He is religion.
His songs become hits even though he does not sing and speak about the problems of the 1960s and 70s: gender equality, feminism, the war in Vietnam, and racial segregation. Elvis – an individual and Elvis on the stage merge into one shapeless mass, of which each and every one may sculpt the King they dream about.
Sid Vicious used to say: “Live fast, die young and have a good-looking corpse”. Elvis changes rebellion into a sequin-studded stage costume. He is too old for a “Club 27” membership and his divine body is a thing of the past. None of that prevented him from staying at the top, though. When he dies in a bathroom in Graceland on 16 August 1977, he becomes immortal.
